Safe Sleep
- important that baby sleeps where you sleep for first year
- keep room temp 65-72F
Reduce risk of SIDS
- alone - they have their own sleep space
- on their back
- crib in your room
- don't fall asleep with your baby on the couch
- early medical advice if baby seems unwell
- feet of baby to foot of crib
- get rid of soft objects and anything loose or fluffy
Safe Swaddling
Swaddling is a tool that can help
- babies have a startle reflex that can wake them up
- the swaddle restrains them from startling themselves awake
- use a light breathable blanket
- not too tight, avoid hip damage
- keep shoulders, head, and neck free
- do NOT swaddle once baby can roll
Temperature Control
- Always dress baby in one more layer than you
- use 2-4 layers of breathable blankets
- cold hands, feet, and nose are normal
- check baby's chest with your hand to feel core temperature
- concerned? Use a digital underarm thermometer
