TOGAF - 2 - Core Concepts
ADM: Phase Names and Purposes
Preliminary Phase - preparation activities to develop an architecture capability
Phase A: Architecture Vision - Initial phase. Scope, stakeholders, approval, etc.
Phase B: Business Achitecture - Support architecture vision
Phase C: Information Systems Architectures
Phase D: Technology Architecture
Phase E: Opportunities and Solutions - Initial implementation planning and identify delivery vehicles
Phase F: Migration Planning - How to move from baseline to target
Phase G: Implementation Governance - Architectural oversight
Phase H: Architecture Change Management - establishes procedures for managing change to the new architectur
Requirements Management - process of managing architecture requirements throughout the ADM
Architecture Content Framework: deliverables, artifacts, and building blocks
Deliverable - Contractually specified and formally reviewed/accepted by stakeholders
Artifact - Architectural work product that describes an aspect of the architecture
Building Block - potentially reusable component of an enterprise capability that can be combined with other building blocks to deliver architectures and solutions
The Enterprise Continuum
Explains how generic solutions can be specialized to support the needs of an individual organization. Provides methods for classifying architecture and solution artifacts. Architecture continuum and solutions continuum.
The Architecture Repository
Used to store different classes of architectural output, at different levels of abstraction.
Architecture Metamodel - Describes the application of an architecture framework
Architecture Capability - stuff that supports governance of the Architecture Repository
Architecture Landscape - assets deployed at a given point in time. Exists at multiple levels of abstraction
Standards Information Base - captures standards with which new architectures must comply
Reference Library - accelerate creation of new architectures: guidelines, templates, patterns, etc.
Governance Log - record of governance activity
Architecture Requirements repository - all requirements agreed to by the architecture board
Solutions Landscape - SBBs planned or deployed by the enterprise
Enterprise Architecture Capability
Need the appropriate business capability: org, roles, responsibilities, skilss, structure
Architecture Capability as an Operation Entity
An Enterprise Architecture division within an organization should be treated like a business. Therefore, it needs things like:
- Financial Management
- Performance Management
- Service Management
- Risk Management (see A.54 Risk Management)
- Resource Management
- Communications and Stakeholder Management (see 3.33 Communications and Stakeholder Management)
- Quality Management
- Supplier Management (see A.60 Supplier Management)
- Configuration Management (see A.7 Configuration Management)
- Environment Management
How to use the TOGAF Standard with other frameworks
As a generic framework, TOGAF can be combined with other frameworks. Adapt and build on TOGAF with other more specific frameworks.
