God Is Compassionate and Gracious
The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! **The God of compassion and mercy! **I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.”
Exodus 34:6-7 NLT
This passage is the most quoted passage from within the Bible.
Compassion = Rahum
Gracious = Hanun
- these words often come together in the scripture
- these words come first to describe God, these are His dominant character traits
- often we boil down God's compassion and grace to him being nice
- God is not just "nice", he is fierce
- we often experience compassion with no action, or compulsion with no compassion
- God embodies both compassion and action
Compassionate
God is emotionally invested
“Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love [Rahum] for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.“Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.
Isaiah 49:15-16 NLT
Gracious
God's compassion leads him to action
God's grace doesn't just go to those who deserve it, the undeserving receive his grace as well
“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.
Luke 15:20 NLT
So you handed them over to their enemies, who made them suffer. But in their time of trouble they cried to you, and you heard them from heaven. In your great mercy, you sent them liberators who rescued them from their enemies. “But as soon as they were at peace, your people again committed evil in your sight, and once more you let their enemies conquer them. Yet whenever your people turned and cried to you again for help, you listened once more from heaven. In your wonderful mercy, you rescued them many times!
Nehemiah 9:27-28 NLT
God is not fair
The people of Nineveh were ruthless, but God calls Jonah to go to them anyway.
Then the king and his nobles sent this decree throughout the city: “No one, not even the animals from your herds and flocks, may eat or drink anything at all. People and animals alike must wear garments of mourning, and everyone must pray earnestly to God. They must turn from their evil ways and stop all their violence. Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.”
Jonah 3:7-9 NLT
This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry. So he complained to the Lord about it: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, Lord? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people. Just kill me now, Lord! I’d rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.”This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry. I’d rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.”
Jonah 4:1-3 NLT
What does it look like when God shows compassion and grace to the enemies in your life?
We want compassion for ourselves, but justice for others.
- we have excuses for our sins
- but we assume that others are just evil
For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.
Romans 5:10 NLT
We choose to be God's enemies. But God is not fair. He still shows us compassion and grace.
Are you aware of God's abounding grace?
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32 NLT
What does it look like to not just have compassionate-less emotion, but to walk with people in their darkness?
If the first thing God describes about himself is compassion and graciousness, what does that mean for how we are called to live?
Often we judge situations on our own ability, not based on God's compassion and character.
Look to Christ, because he is the full representation of God's character.
