Turn the Other Cheek - Good Friday 2024
Matthew 5:38-42 NLT
[38] “You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ [39] But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also. [40] If you are sued in court and your shirt is taken from you, give your coat, too. [41] If a soldier demands that you carry his gear for a mile, carry it two miles. [42] Give to those who ask, and don’t turn away from those who want to borrow.
To turn the other cheek doesn't just mean to be a doormat. In their culture, they kissed cheeks to greet each other. This is symbolic of trying to reestablish the relationship.
To give over your coat is indicating that followers of Jesus do not value their rights over sacrificing for others.
For going two miles, this was about Roman soldiers forcing Jews to carry their gear long distances.
The Cross
- He was insulted and slapped so I might be called his child.
- He was stripped of his garment so I could be wrapped in his righteousness.
- He was forced to carry his cross so I would not have to carry my sin.
- He was willing to give up his rights so I could receive what I have no right to.
